Coconut oil is an ingredient that cannot be missing in our kitchen as well as in our do-it-yourself beauty recipes. As you may have noticed, coconut oil is often in my creams or in my deodorant. This time, I also wanted to test it as a remedy for a nuisance that had appeared to me a few days ago: itchy scalp. Itchy scalp is a nuisance that is quite common and that has several causes i.e. stress or inflamed skin. I don’t know what my cause was but the fact was that my scalp was itchy and I wanted to do something.

Coconut oil for itchy scalp
Coconut oil is known to be a good antibacterial as it consists mainly of lauric acid. Lauric acid has, in fact, a strong antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria and some viruses and fungi as stated in the study reported in the journal Journal of the American Oil Chemists’ Society. For these reasons, I decided to try coconut oil as a remedy for my itchy scalp. Having to apply them on the scalp I thought it would be a shame not to take advantage of this moment by making a nice nourishing mask for my hair. So I prepared three hair masks with ingredients that all of us have at home to help my scalp and have also healthy hair.
1. Only Coconut oil
The easiest mask was to use only coconut oil. Simply I took some oil from the jar and applied it to the hair and scalp after melting it in hands. For greater absorption, I wet my hair very well before applying coconut oil. Once applied, I massaged my scalp and left it on for an hour.
The aroma of coconut is amazing and even just for this reason it’s worth trying. After the exposure time, I washed my hair as usual. Twice with shampoo and then with conditioner to untangle them. I loved the result. My hair was as bright and voluminous as ever and the itching sensation reduced. Due to these great results, I continued to experiment with the benefits of coconut oil preparing other hair masks.
2. A mix of oils: Coconut, Avocado, Sweet Almond
For my second recipe, I thought of combining the effectiveness of coconut oil with the benefits of other oils, such as avocado oil and sweet almond oil. In particular, avocado oil is rich in antioxidants such as vitamin E and contains also minerals. This oil helps to stimulate hair growth and makes them brighter and stronger. Sweet almond oil is also an excellent natural remedy that improves the appearance of our hair, deeply moisturize them and combat dandruff. It is an excellent emollient and is therefore ideal for regulating frizzy hair.
Procedure and benefits
- 2 tbsp coconut oil, 1 tbsp almond oil, 1 tbsp avocado oil in a bowl and mix the oils.
- distribute the cure evenly in the hair and leave for 1 hour.
- afterward, rinse the cure with warm water and wash with shampoo.
If you want to intensify the effect of this mask you can add:
- 10 drops of Tocopherol (Vitamin E) (you can find it here)
- 10 drops of Panthenol (Provitamin B5) (you can find it here)
Tocopherol gives many benefits when used in hair masks. It prevents hair loss, regulates sebum production, and improves the condition of the scalp.
Panthenol is, together with Tocopherol, a useful additive for our hair because it improves their condition and appearance. In particular, it gives hair brightness, softness, and strength.
3. Coconut milk, rice water, aloe Vera
The third recipe that I made is very simple and requires only 3 ingredients:
- Coconut milk
- Rice water
- Aloe vera
The first ingredient in this recipe is coconut milk. For its moisturizing and anti-oxidant properties, this ingredient is excellent for nourishing the scalp by reducing dandruff and itching.
Rice water contains many nutrients such as amino acids, vitamins B and E, minerals, and antioxidants. The use of this water in creams or hair masks gives many benefits. Especially for the hair, it detangles them and makes them bright. It also nourishes the scalp making hair stronger.
Aloe vera is one of the natural products that I use most in my recipes. It contains many nutrients including minerals, sugars, fatty acids, and amino acids showing anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and even anti-oxidant properties. In hair masks, aloe vera helps to reduce irritation of the scalp, responsible for the annoying itching. Click here to know how to prepare it at home.
This recipe was created while I was preparing one of my favorite dishes: chicken curry. It may seem strange but while I’m cooking, I often think about how to use some ingredients in my natural beauty recipes. The other evening while I was cooking rice, I thought it would be a shame to drain it and lose all its nutrients. So I collected the rice water and kept it in the fridge till the next morning.
Procedure and benefits
The next morning I prepared my hair mask, using
- 150mL (5Oz) of rice water,
- 5g (0,03Oz) of aloe vera (find it here),
- 2 tablespoons of coconut milk (find it here).
The procedure is extremely simple. I have combined the three ingredients and mixed them well. After that, I wet my hair thoroughly and applied the mask. I left it on for an hour, massaging the skin from time to time. After the exposure time I washed my hair well as usual (2 times shampoo and once the conditioner).
Only three ingredients give a fantastic result to our hair. The immediately visible effect is the shine that the hair show. It really seems to have done a treatment by a professional hairdresser. I recommend that you try it at least once to test the benefits.
Considerations
These are the three recipes I made and test if coconut oil can help against the itchy scalp. After testing them out, I found my hair very soft, shiny and my scalp healthy.

I need to trice the rice water, coconut milk and aloe Vera. I have only tried the rice water alone and it did help with growth but not with the itchy scalp. But at the moment I have using tea tree oil and that has worked like magic
Oh I will give it a try too! I love tea tree oil
These masks sound so rejuvenating! I have to give them a try!
I love coconut oil – so many practical uses around the house.
I also use it on my dogs regularly for any types of scratching!
that sounds great! 🙂
I love coconut oil and use it for everything! Great recipes and ways to use it. I’ve used the Coconut Oil, Avocado, but never added Almond Oil. I’m going to have to try it.
it’s really good!! 🙂
Super informative post! I sleep with coconut oil in my hair once a week to wash it out in the morning, and I am always left with super soft shiny hair & my hair seems stronger because of it! I love using natural products in my hair care routine!
