The application of a face serum is part of the recommended steps for good skin care. Serums are cosmetic products rich in active substances that are generally applied after cleansing the skin and the application of a moisturizing mask. In short, it a useful product that I immediately wanted to make at home. In this post, I show you how to prepare a DIY anti-aging face oil with a few ingredients. My point of view is that it is not necessary to use so many ingredients to create a good product, the important thing is to choose them carefully to benefit from their characteristics.

What is serum used for?
Before seeing in detail what ingredients we will need and how to prepare our DIY anti-aging face oil, let’s try to understand what the serum is used for. As already mentioned, the serum is a powerful ally for our skincare. Typically it is a mixture of oils to which are added essential oils and active ingredients to enhance its action. The active ingredients are substances with specific properties such as antioxidant, nutritional or moisturizing properties. The addition of these ingredients is carefully chosen according to the type of skin for which the serum is intended.
How do you use a serum?
The application of the serum is a personal “spa moment”. After cleansing and drying my face, I like to apply a couple of drops of serum either directly to my face or by pouring a few drops on my fingers. At this point the most relaxing part, gently massage your face in circular motions. This will help the oil absorb, and to us, relax for a few minutes.
DIY anti-aging face oil
For this oil, I chose to create something very simple. The recipe consists of two oils and one active ingredient. The oils I used were jojoba oil and rosehip oil.
Jojoba oil
Jojoba oil is a very light oil that is absorbed quickly by the skin without leaving it greasy and oily. This oil is ideal if we want to customize our oils through herbal maceration. If like me, you prefer to avoid essential oils on your face, creating herb-infused oils will really help. I wrote a post entirely to them with the process and tips on oils to use. You can find it here.
For this recipe, I let some organic rosemary macerate in 10 mL of jojoba oil for 3 weeks. After this time, the oil will have acquired the typical smell of rosemary, thus avoiding adding essential oils.
Rosehip oil
Rosehip oil is a medium-density oil that does not absorb as quickly as jojoba oil. Rich in polyphenols and vitamins it is often used in anti-aging skincare products. Read more. Although it is defined as comedogenic, meaning it could clog pores inducing blackheads and pimples, I decided to use it anyway. Applying this DIY oil to my face did not cause blackheads or pimples to appear, compared to, say, those caused daily by smog. A good facial cleansing will help to avoid their appearance and be able to enjoy the benefits of this oil.
Vitamin E
Finally, vitamin E or tocopherol. Vitamin E cannot be missing in your kit of ingredients for beauty products. With its antioxidant properties, it is a perfect active ingredient to make our oil a good anti-aging product. These same properties will also help the freshly prepared DIY anti aging face oil to avoid premature rancidity.
DIY anti-aging face oil recipe
To prepare it we are going to use:
- 19 mL (0.64fOz) of Rosehip oil (you can find it here)
- 10 mL (0.34fOz) of Jojoba oil macerated with rosemary leaves (Amazon, Najoba)
- 1 mL (0.03fOz) of Vitamin E Amazon, Dragonspice
- dark glass dropper container (find it here)
The procedure is extremely simple. Once the rosemary herb-infused oils is ready we can prepare the oil by simply combining the ingredients and mixing them.
Tips for storing DIY anti-aging face oil
For this type of product, it is advisable to use dark glass containers with a dropper applicator. This avoids the sun’s rays interacting with the oils triggering potential rancidity processes. The dropper instead helps us to avoid direct contact with the oil and its possible contamination with germs and bacteria.
