In Winter our lips need extra protection. For this reason, I have thought to make a DIY lip balm recipe to protect my lips during these cold days. This DIY recipe will only take less than 2 minutes but will help us to protect ourselves against the cold temperatures of this winter.

What kind of Wax did I use?
To make a lip balm it is essential to use a wax, which can give it the right solid texture to our balm. In this recipe I decided to use two types of waxes: beeswax and carnauba wax.
Beeswax vs Carnauba Wax
Beeswax is widely used in lip balms. I wanted to include it in this recipe because beeswax keeps our lips hydrated and healthy at all times. This wax, in fact, forms a protective and emollient layer that prevents the loss of water from the outer layer of the skin.
Carnauba wax also has emollient and protective properties such as beeswax. It is made from Brazilian palm leaves, making it 100% natural. The main difference with beeswax is the high melting point (80 – 85 ° C). This means that it will take more time and heat to melt. For this reason, I wanted to use this wax in the formulation because it will be able to make the lip balm more consistent and also suitable to be stored in a lip balm tube.
What you will need | DIY Lip balm recipe
Creating a Lip balm takes less than 5 minutes and a few ingredients.
- Beeswax pellets 0.03 oz (1g) (link to buy on Dragonspice)
- Carnauba Wax 0.02oz (0.6g) (Link to buy on Dragonspice)
- Shea Butter 0.08 oz (2.2g) ( Link to buy on Dragonspice)
- Cocoa Butter 0.06oz (1.8g) ( Link to buy on Dragonspice)
- Essential oil (facultative) I honestly prefer to avoid it in lip products
- Glass bowls adapted to the microwave
- Lip balm tube (link to buy on Dragonspice )
DIY Lip balm recipe: Procedure
Preparing a lip balm requires only a few ingredients and does not involve any complicated procedures.
Let’s start
- weighing the waxes and butters in a glass jar
- melt them in the microwave or in a bain-marie. NB: The carnauba wax will need more time to melt
- add essential oils (optional)
- pour into a tube
To customize it, I decorated the stick with colored tape. I used one with glitter to make it more elegant and perfect for a gift.

Yes! I made one a few months ago with a friend’s daughter. I think creating a lip balm can be an activity for children from 6 years old and up. 🙂
