Self-care at home

These days, I decided to do more sport at home following yoga and stretching lessons with Youtube. While I was there doing Bhujangasana I thought ” How long has it been since I cleaned it?”. Definitely too much!  Hence the decision to clean it with what I had in the house.

Yoga mats can be of different types and made of different materials. Many are commonly made of PVC (polyvinylchloride) and others are more eco-sustainable with natural fibers, recycled material, or handmade cork. For example, Planet warrior offers products that are made from recycled plastic bottles and eco rubber. Check here, if you want to know more.

Mine is really for novice yogis but still needs to be cleaned often. Sites specializing in yoga, recommend cleaning the mat once a week which makes it definitely a priority of mine to clean my mat as soon as possible.

Use Natural Cleaning Remedies

When you think of home remedies to clean surfaces, vinegar immediately comes to mind. Surely we have seen our grandmothers and mothers clean glass or surfaces with a solution of water and vinegar. I often use it but to remove limescale from the sink. Limescale is nothing more than calcium and magnesium carbonate residues. In contact with vinegar, they react chemically and the result is the removal of these from our surface. It is able to remove stains and unpleasant odors but I have not found sources that prove antibacterial properties.

Vinegar

With this knowledge, we can pre-treat our mat to remove stains and odors with a solution of water, vinegar, and essential oils (lavender or tea tree).

  • 1/3 cup white or apple vinegar
  • 2/3 cup water
  • drops of essential oil (lavender)

Place the two ingredients in a sprayer and spray it on the mat. Use a damp cloth to wipe over the entire surface and let it dry.

I prefer to use less vinegar to avoid ruining the mat.

Water and little soap

To remove microbes and bacteria, there’s no better remedy than soap and water. Click here to learn how to prepare water and alcohol-based sanitizing solution. Obviously I DO NOT recommend the washing machine, because I don’t know what kind of yoga mat you have, but simply soak it for a few minutes in water with a little soap. Not too much otherwise you’ll end up with foam spilling out of your mat during pranayama…eheheh  Let it dry in the open air avoiding dryers.

Considerations

These are the two simple ways to clean your mat at home without having to buy additional ingredients.

  1. I love that you’ve thought of natural alternatives for this. There’s too many harsh chemicals in this world!
